Mastery Approach

What does Teaching for Mastery approach mean?

Mastering Maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.

The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.

Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.

The five big ideas of the Mastery approach

For every child to succeed in Maths, a deeper understanding of the subject is essential.

To achieve this we follow the Mastery approach of teaching using the Five big ideas.  Four of these big ideas are shown as quarters of the circle, the fifth is the coherence and small steps that runs through them all.
