Outdoor Learning

At GHPS&N the children love to be outdoors - learning, playing and improving well-being. In addition to our own school grounds (with its orchard and wildlife area, large field and established trees), we are very lucky to have a good relationship with the Fuel and Furze charity within the village. They allow us, by prior arrangement, to use the Woodland for both curriculum visits and our popular after school Woodland club.

Each class is able to visit the wood and use it for expanding our creative curriculum - for art, DT and craft, cookery, literacy, Maths, science, geography as well as many aspects of our topic work and environmental awareness. The woods have been used as Sherwood Forest; The Hundred Acre Wood; as part of Darwin's expedition on the Beagle; as well as featuring in some of our version of A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The Woodland club visit once a week, and their activities range from tree and plant identification to cooking over fires. The children all understand how to look after the wood as well as how to stay safe and  identify risks.
