Nurture

Our Nurture Provision at Great Hockham Primary School

At our school, we believe that every child deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported so they can thrive both academically and emotionally. Our nurture provision is an integral part of this commitment. It is designed to offer a welcoming, calm, and structured environment where children can build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop the social and emotional skills they need to succeed.
We recognise that children learn best when they feel secure and understood. That’s why we take mental health and wellbeing seriously. Our team works closely with pupils, staff, and families to identify individual needs early and offer personalised support. Whether a child needs help managing emotions, developing resilience, reconnecting with learning, or navigating difficult life experiences, our nurture approach ensures they receive compassionate, consistent care.
Through small‑group or individual sessions, targeted interventions, and strong relationships, we help children recognise their strengths, build positive routines, and re-engage with classroom learning. Our goal is always to promote the wellbeing of the whole child—celebrating progress, encouraging independence, and ensuring every pupil knows they are an important part of our school community.
Our nurture provision is led by Mrs Hayes and Mrs Shiplee.
Children are offered a number of sessions each half term in a quiet, safe, and supportive environment where they are encouraged to talk, reflect, and explore their feelings and emotions through art and craft activities, stories, games and play.  Sessions often begin with an "emotions" check-in to enable the child to talk about and understand how they feel; and then focus on their individual needs and requirements.  This calm and consistent approach aims to equip them with essential skills and strategies that will boost confidence, self-esteem, independence and resilience going forward; and thereby enabling them to better engage, settle, listen, concentrate, share/take turns, build and maintain friendships and generally thrive.
In addition, other measures have been introduced to support all children across the school, including Time to Talk boxes in each class,  where children can write their name and the name of the adult they would like to talk to and place it in the box discretely; and Year 6 Buddies for the children in Rabbit Class (Nursery/Reception).
