Maths in our school
Mathematics Curriculum Overview
This document sets out our mathematics curriculum overview for each year group, showing how learning is carefully sequenced and built upon as children progress through the school.
We follow a Mastery Approach to mathematics through the use of White Rose, ensuring that pupils develop a deep, secure understanding of key concepts before moving on. Lessons are structured to promote fluency, reasoning and problem-solving, with mathematical language and representations used consistently across the school.
In Nursery, children follow Master the Curriculum, which supports the development of early mathematical understanding and ensures they are well prepared for the expectations of Reception.
Mathematics lessons are taught daily in all year groups. In addition to core lessons, pupils may receive:
Pre-teaching to introduce key concepts and vocabulary in advance
Additional focus on times tables and fluency, where appropriate
Targeted interventions to support pupils who need extra help to keep up
This layered approach ensures that all children are supported and challenged appropriately, enabling them to develop confidence, competence and enjoyment in mathematics.
At our school, we recognise that a strong understanding of mathematical vocabulary is essential for pupils to access, understand and apply mathematical concepts with confidence. Mathematics is a language in its own right, and pupils need to explicitly learn and revisit key terms in order to reason, explain their thinking and solve problems effectively.
We therefore place a strong emphasis on the direct teaching of mathematical vocabulary across all year groups. Key terms are introduced clearly, modelled in context and revisited regularly to support long-term retention. Where appropriate, we use the Frayer Model to deepen understanding. This approach helps pupils explore a word’s meaning through definitions, examples, non-examples and key characteristics, ensuring vocabulary is not only recognised but truly understood and applied accurately.
The attached document outlines the key mathematical vocabulary taught in each area of learning and how it is supported in lessons. By developing a shared and secure mathematical language, we enable all pupils to communicate their ideas precisely and succeed in their mathematical learning.
